Various and Sundry

  • Noah has started going to sleep much more easily, which is a huge blessing. I can now usually rock him to sleep in the rocking chair in his room. Well, the other night, Nathan peeked in to check on us, because I had been in there for a while. Noah and I had been asleep together in the rocking chair for like an hour! I don't know how many people can say they have rocked themselves to sleep.
  • I was browsing on Weight Watchers' website and read that nursing women should only lose a pound a week. Otherwise it messes with your milk supply. Stink. That's about the rate at which I've been losing, but I thought it was pretty slow. I guess not.
  • Noah and I stretch exactly the same when we wake up. We did it in sync one day, and it cracked Nathan up.
  • My new favorite food is kale. I have never liked any kind of sauteed greens before, but I really like kale, sauteed with some garlic and olive oil, with some lemon juice squirted on it at the end. Mmmm. I can't figure out why my current favorite does not involve chocolate. . . .
  • I have started spring cleaning. One day it hit me how messy (and somewhat dirty) our apartment is. The slipcovers have been washed, and some filing has been done (shortening the monstrous pile that had accumulated on the desk). It's just the beginning, though, folks. I'm going to be at this for weeks. After that, I'm going to get some pictures up on these dang bare walls.
  • The messages inside of Dove chocolates are ridiculous. My personal favorite is, "When two hearts race, both win." Are you serious?!
  • I worked out for the first time the other day, and it was great! I thought I'd only make it for about 10 minutes on the elliptical machine--that's about all the stamina I credited myself with. But I went for 30 min. and could have gone longer, and I felt so good afterwards! My cheeks were rosy for the rest of the day. I just needed to get my blood pumping.

This picture is hilarious. The snapshot is of my brother, Ken, when he was a baby. We have been saying that Noah looked a lot like Uncle Ken, and now we have proof!

But if he grows up to look like Uncle Ken, that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. ;)

And my mom got a nice shot of me and Noah in Austin.
Aww.

A Nod to H-town, My Hometown

This is a good article about how Houston is a great "opportunity city" and is poised to be a powerful international city in the years to come. It talks about Houston's multiculturalism, industry, low cost of living, entrepreneurial spirit, etc. Yay H-town!

http://american.com/archive/2008/march-april-magazine-contents/lone-star-rising

Things I don't like about Houston:
- traffic!!!! I hate it, hate it, HATE IT!!!!
- the lack of houses with charm--nearly everything is cookie-cutter. Most houses in Houston's suburbia look alike.

Things I love about Houston:
- amazing food and variety of restaurants
- really great shopping, including charming little shopping centers
- the very low cost of living (which I can really appreciate after living in Boston)
- the women dress up for everything :)
- a lot of my friends are successful in business--good climate for it
- I know more great musicians in Houston than in Boston; in fact, Houston is a wonderful place for the arts. A few years ago, I heard that Houston is second only to NYC for the number of theater seats.

I want to hear from those of you who live in Houston or have lived there in the past. What do you like and dislike?

Noah's New Stats

Noah had his 2-month pediatrician appointment today (although he'll actually be 11 weeks old tomorrow). He's doing really well! Here are his new stats:

weight: 13 lbs., 7 oz.
length: 25.5"

He's actually in the 75th percentile for weight, 58th percentile for head circumference, and 97th percentile for length (!).

The doctor also checked his strength, head control, etc., and he passed all of that with flying colors. He actually loves to stand up, and last night, Nathan was only holding his hands while Noah stood, balancing himself and supporting his weight. Isn't that crazy?!

Noah also got four shots. It was less traumatizing for me this time, probably because I did not know about the shot last time, and its suddenness made it all the more shocking. This time I knew what was coming. Noah screamed and turned about as red as I've ever seen him, but then I fed him, and he has seemed absolutely fine ever since.

All in all, it was a good little trip to the pediatrician! He's a strong, growing boy, which is great!

Add This to Your Dictionary

bubblegut--(n.) a gassy belly

Nathan came up with this word one day when he heard me talking to Noah. He thought I said it, but he had misheard me. In any case, we decided that it's the perfect word for, well, gassy situations. For example, we can say, "Hey, Buddy, does your tummy hurt? Do you have a bubblegut?"

This comes out of a great tradition of making up words, begun by Mark and Nathan in college. Here are a couple more for you to add to your dictionary:

neveryday--(adj.) when something never happens; Going to my Physics 101 class? That's a neveryday occurrence.

Shawshank--(v.) to get out of a situation; You really Shawshanked your way out of that one!

Do any of you clever people have any more to add?

New Bags!

You must check out Meredith's new bags! I LOVE them. Meredith made me my diaper bag for Christmas and I love it, too. There is a picture of it under "Custom Bags"--it's the middle one on the top row. It's large and super cute.

I like her stuff because she has a really good eye for what will look good (which I appreciate a lot since I stink at accessorizing), and her bags are very reasonably priced, too.

Deep in the Heart of Texas

So if a picture is worth a thousand words, what happens when you have a thousand pictures?

Okay, so I will not subject you to all the pictures we took on our trip to Texas, but I do have quite a few for you to peruse. :)

We headed down to Texas on March 6 for Matthew and Emily's wedding that weekend, then Noah, Nathan, and I spent a week in Waco, Nathan headed back to Boston, and Noah and I spent another week in Houston. We had a great time, and we were really sad to come back to 40-degree weather!

We flew into Houston before heading to Irving for the wedding, and my grandparents got to meet their new great-grandson.

Granny loved holding Noah, of course.

Then we headed off to Irving for the wedding and to introduce Noah to the Benesh clan. Grandma Tanner was one of the first to get to hold him.

My dad also got to hang out with us a bit at the church.

Emily, Matthew, and part of the wedding party. Deborah was the maid of honor, and Nathan was actually the best man. Unfortunately, we only got to see Uncle Daniel for about a day before he had to head back to Atlanta.
Emily actually wore her grandmother's wedding dress, which I think is really cool. They had a few things done to it in order to modernize it and fit it to her, I guess. I think it would be absolutely awesome if my wedding dress became an heirloom in my family.
Grandma and Grandpa Benesh got to have some time with Noah at the wedding, too.

Aunt Deb wasn't about to miss out.
*Uncle Andrew, even though you probably held Noah the most out of all the aunts and uncles, somehow we did not end up with a picture! How in the world did that happen?!

And on to Waco we went. After the reception, we went straight to Nathan's parents' house, outside of Waco. They have a nice farmhouse on some land, and it's always nice to go there and relax. Noah loved going outside. I think he liked all the neat things to see, along with the sun and warm breeze.

Asleep with Grandpapa

Noah's very first hot day. It was nearly 90 degrees!

Just look at that lip. It doesn't get any cuter.

Had to get some pictures with the cowboy hat. He has almost outgrown it!

This is my absolute favorite picture from the whole trip.

Riding in the car.

After our stay in Waco, my parents met us in Georgetown, where we had another short visit with Grandma Tanner.

And then we headed to Dripping Springs to see Uncle Ken and Aunt Meredith. They have the cutest parsonage with a ton of land attached, and it's that typical pretty Austin land.

Grandpa, GG, and Noah

Hey, Buddy, what's going on in that diaper?

The Williams clan.
This picture was good of everyone except Noah. Oh well! :)

Mom and Noah at dusk.

Dorian and Matt came to meet the baby.

On the way to Houston. Love that smile.

Noah got to meet Aunt Les!

Granny, Papa, GG, and Grandpa enjoyed having Noah back in Houston for a while.
Here's Granny giving Noah a bath. He sure looks content!

Mom had a gift certificate for a manicure & pedicure that she passed along to me. I got a French manicure, which I then felt conspicuous about. I mean, what do I need a French manicure for? To change diapers? Oh well--it looked pretty.
We got to go to dinner with Mark, Kim, Sarah, and Ryan.

I love this picture of Sarah and Ryan.
Noah kept smiling, but I couldn't get it on camera! That dang elusive smile!

When all else fails, poke the baby.
Mark and Kim.
They're getting married on April 5! Nathan is in the wedding, but Noah and I won't be able to make it. Too bad! I am sure it will be beautiful. Mark was one of Nathan's college roommates.

My cousin, Julie, who is having her baby in June. She came over to meet Noah and get some baby tips. :)

We went up to First Baptist one day to meet Courtney for lunch, and I am kicking myself for not getting a picture, especially when she picked up Moriah! That little girl is the cutest, and so big!! She kept saying, "Cute baby. Cute baby." You know she's on my good side, now.

Noah and Elsa, one of my mom's friends.

We also got to see Melissa and Gabe!

Aunt Patti came over to see Noah right before we headed out on Friday.
It was such a great trip!

Easter Ruminations

So Noah and I accompanied Uncle Ken and Aunt Meredith to their church in Dripping Springs on Sunday, which was Palm Sunday. Ken and Meredith have been living there since last summer, and I've been wanting to see their house and their church for a long time, so I'm really glad we got to fit the visit in.

Anyhow, I must confess that during the sermon, my mind was wandering. At one point, I was thinking about a baby gift that I would like to get my most wonderful friend, April. I was thinking about how much fun it is to find the perfect gift for someone--something that they'll really love. Maybe this has something to do with my nurturing side, but I also love to give them something that they will also get a lot of use out of, and I feel like I get brownie points if it's also something they actually need. So during the sermon, I was thinking about this gift, the color April would most like, etc., when my mind wandered back to what the preacher was saying. He was talking about Jesus' death on the cross, and something struck me: God feels the same way about gift-giving. As fulfilling as it is to me to give the perfect gift, how much more satisfied did God feel when he gave us his perfect Gift, Jesus? And I know that since I love it even more if the person really needs what I gave them, how much more did God love it that not only did he give us something that we needed, but would absolutely perish without? And all of this comes from his desire to nurture us out of his great love for us.

Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits--who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
Psalm 103:1-5

Ghostwriter

Hi again, this is Nathan. Lauren requested that I write this entry to let you know that not every update on this blog comes from her (hello -- there's an "& Nathan" after that "Lauren"). Anyway, she's curious if any of you can spot the entries I've posted. Just to give you a hint, in addition to the one about Matthew and Emily's wedding, there's at least two I've posted in the last month.

And just to prove it's me, here's a silly picture of Lauren that she hasn't approved for publication:

This picture was taken on a boat in Boston Harbor. I like it because not only does her hair look really red to me, but she also looks like she's pretending to be a pirate and yelling
YAAARGH!!!!

Finally, in case you're worried that my atrocious writing will continue to dominate this blog, fear not, for Noah and Lauren return to Boston on Friday. Afterward, you can be assured that Lauren's regularly scheduled updates will return. =)

-Nathan

*UPDATE: This comes to you compliments of Andrew:

Congratulations Matthew and Emily!

Hi everyone, this is Nathan. I just wanted to congratulate my brother Matthew and my new sister-in-law Emily, who got hitched on Saturday, March 8th! Lauren, Noah, and I were all down in Irving for the big event.

The lovely couple.

Emily, I'm so sorry, but this is the best picture I got of the two of you coming out of the house. I really didn't mean for you to look like you're wearing a monocle!

Preparing for the drive off into wedded blissfulness!

Well, we wish you two the best, and we'll be praying for you all the way!

I Forgot One

Noah recently found his hands and loves to put them in his mouth. The other day, I found him doing this (gripping the ring on the ladybug). He's never gripped an object before, so I thought that was pretty cool. He looked pretty intense about it, so I said, "Wow, Buddy, good job! Now do you know how to let go?" Apparently not, because he held on for a good three to four minutes. Eventually I realized he was trying to pull the ladybug to his mouth, and of course, it wasn't coming detached. The arm of the little play gym was starting to bow, even. It cracked me up.

Eight Weeks Old

Noah is eight weeks old today! Here are some pictures from the last week:

Holding hands with Hannah

Love that sling!

This one was taken today. This is Noah in the outfit I was going to have him wear to Uncle Matthew's wedding this weekend. Um, it's a little big, don't you think?
I have had the hardest time finding him a cute, dressy outfit for the wedding. I thought I had gotten something that would work at Babies R Us, but when I got it home, I realized that some sweet customer had mixed and matched, and the shirt was a 0-3 month shirt, but the pants were 3-6 months, so they were ridiculously long. I found this cute outfit at Target, but it's too big, too. He might just wear it, anyway.

Prayer Request

**UPDATE** Today I am feeling much better. I have still had a very low fever from time to time, but overall I feel so much better--no more chills or aches, and I have some energy! Good thing, since I have so much to do before we fly out tomorrow. Thank you so much for all your prayers.

Hey guys,

Please pray for me. I came down with mastitis yesterday, and I feel absolutely awful. It feels like the flu, except you're not allowed to sleep more than 2 hours at a time (less if it takes a long time to put your baby to sleep, like Noah).

I got some super-antibiotics yesterday, and the doctor said I should feel much better within 24 hours, but I don't. I still have fever, chills, aches, etc.

We are flying to Texas on Thursday for Matthew's wedding, and I would really like to be 100% by then (or at least less exhausted). The upside to the trip is that there is no better place to be when you're a sick mom than the grandparents' house(s), because they can handle caring for the baby. Right now I'm overwhelmed, trying to take care of Noah and myself. Nathan took the day off yesterday to help out, and he did a great job, but now he is exhausted, too.

Thanks a bunch.

The Wheels on the Honda Go 'Round and 'Round

So Noah and I have gotten used to running errands together. Or, rather, I have gotten used to the idea that he does not have to nap or eat in the same place at exactly the right time or the world will fall apart. So we have been venturing out into the wide world again.

Well, technically, we have been doing this for a few weeks now. But this week we've had a couple of days that were full of driving around, and Noah did great.

On Thursday, we went to our mom & baby group in the morning, then we headed out to the mall. Now, I will be honest. The real reason I drove 25 minutes out to this particular mall is because it's the only one with a Chick-fil-A, and I had a coupon for a free meal that was about to expire. Come on, now, people, you know my love for Chick-fil-A; I am not going to miss out on that.

So what I now know is that Chick-fil-A is apparently the weekday go-to place for moms. When I walked into the food court, there was hardly anyone there. I mean, it was a weekday at lunchtime, so that's understandable. There were not more than a couple of people at any restaurant counter (can you call them "restaurants" when they're in a mall?). But there was a line eight people deep at Chick-fil-A, and it was mostly groups of moms and kids. So here I go, initiating myself into this new world.

I initiated myself further when, just as I sat down with my bowl of chicken soup and cup of Dr. Pepper, Noah decided that it was time for him to eat. I could tell there would be no putting him off. But what do you do when you have chicken soup? If it were a sandwich or nuggets, I could pack it up and go nurse him somewhere and eat discreetly. But not with soup. I couldn't even carry the bag around with me without being afraid it'd spill. So I pulled out my trendy Hooter Hider and fed him while I fed myself. It felt so weird, sitting there nursing him in the middle of the mall. That was my first time doing that by myself in public. At least when you're with other people (other moms, in particular), there is strength in numbers and you don't feel so, well, conspicuous. I felt like everyone was watching me, which of course was not true. Oh, and let me tell you, it's probably not the wisest thing to eat soup over your child's body. I laid a napkin on top of the Hooter Hider on top of Noah, but I still dripped all over it. Good thing the soup wasn't hot.

Then I went shopping and bought my first pair of postpartum jeans. I like them, but ugh, they are two sizes larger than my last pair of jeans. Anyhow, moving on. I also bought a chocolate bar at the Lindt store because they had a chili flavored one, and Nathan and I have been curious to try chili flavored chocolate. We ate it later that night. (Hmm, maybe this has something to do with those jeans....) It was alright. It didn't really taste like chilis; it just kind of left a hint of spiciness in the back of your mouth after you ate it.

And another thing--all the ladies working at the mall this day were apparently mothers who had just shipped their last child off to college, because they were all interested in Noah, asked how old he was, commented on his size, and told me that they had just shipped their last child off to college. Either this was some strange coincidence, or this is a new sales technique.

After our trip to the mall, we went home, Noah ate again, then we went and picked up Nathan and headed to Bible study. So Noah and I were out almost constantly from 10am to 8:30pm or so. Even though it doesn't seem like a huge thing, I feel like it really is a big milestone, because it's like we've proven that we are not tied to the house and are flexible enough to alter our routine every now and then in order to accommodate life. Next hurdle: church!

Friday was a busy day, too. We went with our friends, Kendra and Hannah, to Bed Bath & Beyond (where I bought an ice cream maker--yay!), Babies R Us, and Michael's. Then today we met the Cochrans and Robinsons for lunch and made a trip to Target. Now, I had forgotten what a crazy place Target is on a weekend afternoon, but luckily I had already decided to put Noah in the sling.

Ah, yes, the sling. The sling is a wonderful thing because it allows me to keep my hands free. The baby stays all curled up on your chest, which is nice because it typically soothes them and they go to sleep (or Noah does, anyway), and it also keeps them within your own personal space, which means that strangers are less likely to try to get in his face or touch him when admiring him. Plus, it keeps me from either 1.) trying to figure out how to push a stroller and handle a cart or 2.) carrying the heavy car seat inside and putting that in the cart. With the sling, I can just wear the baby and push the cart like a regular person.

Anyway, in addition to being more comfortable with getting out, the other point all this is leading to is that I am very thankful that we have a car. As you probably remember, we didn't have a car for our first three years here in Boston. We got around just fine via public transportation, but it is definitely so SO SO much more convenient to go places in your own car. Especially if you have a baby with you. On some days, I wouldn't get on the bus to go to work until 11am, and at that time of day there are a lot of moms and children on the bus. Now, this is pretty annoying for the other passengers, because the strollers take up half of the aisle (or more), so if there are three or four strollers on the bus, there IS no aisle any more. Also, the strollers block a lot of seats, so sometimes you end up standing when there are a bunch of empty seats on the bus, which is kind of annoying, especially when you are pregnant and trying to keep your morning sickness at bay. But despite my annoyance, I always felt kind of bad for those moms, because it's enough trouble to get yourself around on the bus, but to get yourself plus your child(ren) around on the bus is a whole other story. So I am very, very thankful that I have my little Honda to get around in.

Besides, there is no bus that goes to Chick-fil-A. That right there is cause for celebration that we own a car. :)

For Grandma Tanner

Looks like the Great Leslie -- I mean Noah -- is ready for his race from New York to Paris. The kids in Nathan's family used to watch the movie The Great Race almost every time they visited his Grandma and Granddaddy Tanner. The movie stars Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood, and Peter Falk.

We don't throw near as many pies around here, but I somehow doubt Noah will be able to keep his outfit clean for as long as Leslie did!

*Disclaimer - Nathan's original choice for the title of this post was 'Throw more brandy! Throw brandy!!'... but I made him change it.
