Little Things and Big Things

Little Things:
  • It is getting light here at 4:25am. I know this because I've been up feeding Noah at that hour a couple of times. That is dang early for the sun to come up! Nathan says that it's not the light that bothers him; it's that the birds start singing so early. This morning I woke up to feed Noah, and I totally thought he had slept through the night. It was as bright as it is at 7:15, and it was only 5:15.
  • Noah is sleeping on his side now. He is also only waking up once a night to eat, in the early morning hours, which is great. Sleep is getting better. I find I would still really like a good solid 8 or 9 hours, which I haven't gotten since before he was born. I think we may be close.
  • We saw this on our walk last weekend. Sheesh:
  • I got a perfect brow wax the other day.
  • I mentioned a while back that I was starting Weight Watchers to lose some baby weight. Well, it's going really well! I have been doing it for three weeks, and I've lost 5.2 lbs. I'm really happy with that. I even contemplated putting this under "Big Things," but I thought that might be overstating it a bit. :) That may seem slow, but it's a great pace for me for a couple of reasons: 1. losing too fast would affect my milk supply, and 2. a friend of a friend, Erin, who's a nutritionist, mentioned that you can only physiologically lose two pounds of fat a week. I'm losing about 1.75 lbs. per week, so I'm pretty happy with that. My goal is to be down to my goal weight by my birthday in September, and when I get there, I'm going to get tons of awesome fall clothes. I can't wait!
  • We pulled out the exersaucer for Noah a couple of weeks ago because he was really bored with all his other toys. The funny thing was that at first it just made him frustrated, because he couldn't get the toys to his mouth (which annoyed him because typically everything goes in his mouth).

    But since then, he's decided he likes it. In fact, Smarty Pants figured out that if he pushes certain buttons, they make animal sounds. I love this video because he looks so surprised and pleased that he made the music play!



Big Things:
  • Really there's only one big thing right now: my grandpa is really ill. He's had heart trouble for nearly 25 years, and has steadily been getting weaker for the past several years. He's had bypass surgery, stints, and is on so many medications that whenever he goes to a new doctor they just tell him to keep taking what he's taking, because they don't understand it. Well, about a week ago he felt like he was having a stroke, so they called 911 and he went to the hospital. He absolutely hates the hospital, but they wouldn't let him come home until yesterday, because his blood was not thin enough yet. Apparently, they're afraid that the stroke(s) he had was just a precursor to a major one that will probably happen within the next 30 days. He is not an easy patient, because he needs to be moved every 20 minutes or so because of sciatic nerve damage, he went blind a couple of weeks ago due to botched cataract surgery, and he just hates being in the hospital. All of this makes him, well, a bit ornery. He depends heavily on my grandmother for his care, and I am pretty sure she's dead tired after the last week. So please pray for my family--for God's will regarding Papa's health, for Granny (as the main caregiver), and for the rest of the family's emotional strain as they deal with him nearly dying. (I very nearly flew home this week; that's how close it was.) Thanks much.

Journaling

I used to try to keep a journal. I was terrible at it. I generally dislike writing because it takes too much time. Which was problematic for me in college, as an English major. I'm too impatient to enjoy writing too much. I'd much rather tell you what I think than write it down.

But all throughout my youth and young adulthood, I'd try to keep a journal, quite unsuccessfully. Every so often, I'd make a new pact with myself that I would write in it every single day, and I'd do it diligently for a couple of weeks, then I'd peter out and realize later that I hadn't written a blessed word for six months.

There are several reasons I wanted to journal. It probably all started because I love stories--I have always loved reading, ever since I was a very little girl, and I guess as a ten-year-old I wanted to write down the story of my life so I could go back and read it later. Or so my little girl could read it. Plus, some of the novels I read involved a secret diary, which was romanticized in my mind as the very thing that makes you cool. I even had a diary with a lock on it at one time. Later, in my late teens/early twenties, I was motivated by the fact that there was always so much talk at church about keeping a journal. "Keep a journal so you can see how God worked in your life," or "Keep a prayer journal." I always thought this was a good idea but was never consistent about it.

I still like the idea of journaling, but I can't imagine when I'd have time or motivation to actually write down, in my own handwriting (which is slower than typing), the things that happen every day or my innermost thoughts. I am simply too impatient for it. The best I can imagine myself doing is jotting down a list of things to pray for. Or maybe journaling the personal stuff just once a month or something.

Anyway, as Nathan and I were doing some spring cleaning in our bedroom on Saturday, I found a stash of my old journals. They were in a drawer I hadn't even opened in nearly two years. These were all journals from college and from the first few months after we moved to Boston, and they were formatted (mostly) as letters to God, or prayers. I flipped through them and enjoyed reading them so much. One of the entries I ran across was about the first time Nathan told me he loved me. I also read one I had written about Uncle Rick shortly before he died. It was just interesting how vivid those memories became when I read about them again. I had forgotten a lot of little details or how I felt about certain things.

I still don't think it's practical to expect myself to journal every single day, but having some kind of outlet has become important for me. That's why the blog is so perfect! I can document my life in a somewhat cursory way--there are no serious, deep thoughts here (or few, anyway), but this is a place where I can record my life--the funny things Noah does, what pregnancy was like, etc. Plus, I now take way more pictures than I ever have, because whenever something funny or sweet or fun happens, I think, "Oh, I need a picture of that for the blog." And it's funny how much more consistent I've been about writing posts than I ever was about journaling. Honestly, I think having an audience motivates me. And I also think that I like that there's no expectation to say something deep in every post or to really ruminate on something, which I guess I felt was an element that belonged in every journal entry. I can just be casual here.

Gosh, the pressure I put on myself to put out the perfect journal! It needed to be a story, it needed to be deep, and it needed to have an entry every day. No wonder I'd quit!

Anyhow, my point is that I really enjoy this blog. Maybe I'll supplement it with a real, handwritten journal entry once a month or so, full of more personal stuff that would not be blog-appropriate. But this has become a great happy medium for me personally, as well as a great way to share our life's happenings with our far-off families (especially Noah-related things!). It's satisfying and enjoyable for me; I hope it's enjoyable for all of you, too.

So Cute

My friend Christina is awesome. Not only is she a really sweet person, but she is also going to be a great mom! (She's expecting her first baby really soon!)

Christina makes some really cute things I wanted to show you guys, because you may be interested in picking a few of these items up for yourself or for gifts. Basically, she makes aprons for adults and for little girls. I believe you can buy them individually or in sets (like for a mom and daughter or grandmother and granddaughter). Just tell me these are not adorable:


I've seen these aprons in person, and the pictures don't do them justice. They are so well made and crisp. I think they look like something you'd see sold in Williams Sonoma or something, except they're cooler because they have that nifty little towel sewn on.

How Not to Start Your Child on Solid Food

Nathan has been excited about Noah starting on solids. Every few days, he wants to feed the kid something, which of course he can't do, since we haven't even tried out rice cereal yet. So a couple of weeks ago, as Nathan was eating chips, he said, "I want him to taste the chips." "No! Are you crazy?" I said. "Oh, come on! I'll just touch it to his lips." "But they're wasabi flavored!" "It'll be okay! I'm just going to touch it to his lips! I just want to see what he does!"

Nevermind the fact that when Nathan first tasted the wasabi chips, he said, "Oh my gosh, these are strong! They'll clear your sinuses!" Seriously, what in the world were we thinking?

So Nathan just touched the chip to Noah's lip so that a few grains of salt/powder came off. The poor kid's eyes turned red immediately, and of course he started crying. This reaction only lasted a couple of minutes, but boy did we feel bad! Nathan felt terrible for thinking up this evil plan, and I felt bad for letting it happen.

Lesson of the Day: Never give your baby anything wasabi-flavored. As if that weren't perfectly obvious before.

I know we are not the only parents to have done something dumb that we thought would be no big deal at the time but in hindsight realized our stupidity. I want stories! Have you ever done something with/to your kids and later thought, "I knew better"? There have got to be some good stories out there. Post a comment!

**UPDATE** 5/19--I actually had a dream last night that I was horrified after I found out that Nathan fed Noah beef stew! Ha!

Trifling Things

I made a trifle out of angel food cake and devil's food cake. I'm calling it my "Powers and Principalities" Trifle.

Upon Request

Lately several family members have requested more pictures. So I took a ton today--in fact, when I went to upload them to the computer, it turns out I had 108 pictures to upload, just from this afternoon! That's mostly due to the nifty speed picture function on the camera, where it takes several in a row, which makes it easier to catch a cute smile or a funny face. Don't worry, though, I'm not posting all 108 pictures. :) Anyway, this is for all the aunts and uncles who have been requesting more pictures.

Noah's New Stats

Noah had his four-month appointment this week. The pediatrician said he is lookin' good. Here are his new stats:

length: 26.5"
weight: 15 lbs., 3 oz.

That puts him in the 58th percentile for weight (down from about 75), and he is still up in the 94th percentile for length. He's a tall kiddo.

We went to a new doctor, and when the receptionist told him he was a baldy, he just smiled at her. It was all over from there. He had everyone charmed. :)

My First Mother's Day

I want to wish a very Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there! I feel I have a very generous spirit today and am hoping everyone has enjoyed much happiness and joy this eleventh of May. What a neat thing it is to be a mom.

This morning, Nathan got up before me (a very rare thing), and it wasn't long before I heard him banging around in the kitchen. Would you believe the guy made me breakfast? He even took Noah in there to "help" him out, which really means that he took him in there to entertain him so I could sleep longer. Now, it is a big deal for my husband to cook. He always claims he can cook, but I don't have much faith in the claim since I have rarely, if ever, seen it. (Of course, according to him, his claim is only good when it comes to camp food. That's what you get when you marry an Eagle Scout, I guess. Do you think they'll ever have a merit badge for gourmet cooking?) He made me some really yummy chocolate chip-banana pancakes. That is good stuff, my friend, and much better than camp food. It is an accomplishment that I will not let him forget, especially the next time I am in the mood for pancakes.... He also got me a really sweet card, along with some footed dessert dishes that I have been wanting for a long time. Yay!

It is nice to be a mom and be honored on Mother's Day. I didn't know it would mean so much to me, but I guess I didn't know how great it is to be a mom before, either.

So what did we do for the rest of the day? Pretty much nothing but lie on the couch and watch the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice. What a good day, right? We didn't go to church and kept it a quiet day because I have been sick. I still have not gotten over my cold, and yesterday we were out for a good bit of the day, which resulted in my losing my voice almost completely. It's so weird--it doesn't hurt, and my cough is much better, but I have no voice. Little Noah had a good day, too, and was fun to be around. And I got a really funny card from Nathan's parents and a sweet voicemail from my mom.

And a very Happy Mother's Day to Mom and Mama B., too! Y'all are very special to us.

Four Months Old!

Noah is doing some fun new things, the best of which is laughing! We heard his first laugh last night, and I caught the third and fourth little giggles in a video:



What else is new? Well, he is getting much more coordinated with his hands, so he is able to grab his toys with more consistency--and get them to his mouth. In fact, check out this picture. There's no better way to fall asleep than in the middle of playing with your toys!


The other funny thing that he has started doing is trying to sit up. Well, it's more that he just is tired of wherever he is and wants to either sit up or forward. Anyway, he pushes his elbows back in order to push his torso forward. It's really pretty smart of him to have figured this out, except that he only succeeds in getting his head and shoulders forward. Is this a normal developmental thing? Because I haven't read anything about it.

He's getting more and more active, too. Sometimes I think he'd be a lot happier if he could just sit up and crawl, because he gets bored sitting in one place for a while. He's keeping me busy!

All Things New

Lauren is changing a few things. It is time for some refurbishment, some newness, some refreshment. It is spring, after all. And I am ready to start looking better, because I am afraid I'm falling into that dreaded mommy mode--half the time, my hair is a mess, I'm dressed in running pants and a t-shirt, and I just don't look that cute. Granted, my Me Time is at a premium, but if I were more disciplined with my time, I bet I could fit some more things in during my day (like if I quit wasting so much time on the computer...). I told Nathan I am going to make an effort not to adopt the frazzled mommy look, and here I am doing it like three days a week. So it's time to make some changes.

  1. I need a haircut like nobody's business. It is nearly as long as it was when I had long hair, and I actually want it above my shoulders. Somehow it never looks good. So I am going to make an appointment soon.
  2. I am going to have my brows waxed. Oh, I cannot wait. The girl who does them always does a PERFECT job. Because there is nothing I dread more than than having a bad brow wax. Amen? I mean, you definitely do not want some weird shape or for them to take too much off. But when it's done right, I just feel so polished and pretty.
  3. I went to my first Weight Watchers meeting today. I have pretty much hit a wall with my weight loss (or, really, that happened a month or two ago), and I still have 20-25 lbs. to lose. Yes, that much. Sigh. I know if I don't attack this and just get rid of it, I will be fighting this weight for years. So I am going to be proactive and get it off now.
  4. I am going to start running--I think. I'm a little anxious about writing that on the blog since I haven't actually done it yet, and I don't want to announce something that doesn't end up happening, but I also want to put it out there so I hold myself accountable to it. I used to really enjoy running. In college, I used to run two or three miles about three times a week, and I've never felt or looked better. So I am going to try to work up to that again. (So what if that was eight years ago? Eek!) In fact, Nathan and I have talked about signing up for a 5k run sometime this summer or fall so we're motivated to get in shape for it (although I should say "I" instead of "we" because Nathan has never been so out of shape that he couldn't go out and run 3 miles at a moment's notice).

Free Netflix

Anybody want a month of free Netflix movies?

Nathan and I have a Netflix membership, and we love it. We never have to go to the video store--we just go online, move what we want to see to the top of our queue, and within a day or two, they're here. You can keep the DVD for as long as you like, too, because there are no late fees, and the shipping is free. Plus, everything is nearly always available, even new releases. And compared to paying $5 per rental at Blockbuster (plus the gas to get there, plus the occasional late fee), we pay less than $15 per month with Netflix and watch a movie or two a week. I also really like that I can go online and create a queue of things I know I already want to see.

Anybody want to check it out? I just got some coupons for one free month in the mail that I can give away to friends and family, so I will be giving them to the first four people who leave a comment.

Our Weekend

Although I was not feeling my best on Friday, we did drive up to New Hampshire to enjoy our church's couples retreat, and we were glad we did. I definitely was not at my best the whole weekend, but it was still fun, and we got to meet some new couples and develop new relationships.

I left Boston with a cold and arrived in New Hampshire with allergies. Now, I do not usually suffer from allergies, so this is a little weird. But once we got there, I was dealing with the runny nose, uncontrollable sneezing, crazy itching eye, itchy throat, etc. Once I got some Benadryl in me, I felt much better. But for the better half of the retreat, our small group suffered through my sneezing and watery eye, which made it look like I was touched by and crying at everyone's stories, which was kind of funny.

This was also the first time that we handed Noah off to any kind of babysitter, save my mom and grandma, who probably only babysat him a total of five hours over two different days. Nathan and I were really kind of anxious-sad to pass him off to anyone, but we knew that it had to be done at some point. Well, the little guy did not do so well. I think it was a combination of a couple of factors: 1.) the room where he was supposed to nap had lots of little toddlers, so it was not all that quiet, and 2.) he had never spent that much time away from me. The one day he did not do well, he had been in the care of the babysitters all morning, was with us at lunch but got passed around the table a lot (so he wasn't really WITH us), and then went back to the babysitters for a couple of hours before he let them have it. They had to call us out of our small group, and when I got there, the poor kid was inconsolable. I think we may have to do this in smaller increments--a couple hours here, a couple hours there. Any tips?

All in all, we had a very nice weekend, and it was good to get away and to meet some really nice new people!

Ugh

I am sick. I hate being sick. I am a sick weenie.

Noah got a cough earlier this week, and he was a weenie, too. Poor kid was super fussy for a couple of afternoons. But Mommy is even more of a weenie, because I am not experiencing my very first cold ever, which I would imagine is quite an unpleasant experience.

Anyway, apparently I caught whatever Noah caught, except I have it worse. Noah had a yucky cough on Tuesday, it was better on Wednesday, and it was pretty much gone on Thursday. I got his cough, but it didn't seem bad at all, and I wasn't worried about it. However, I knew something was up when I was just exhausted yesterday. I hadn't been that bone tired since I was pregnant, people, not even when Noah was eating every two hours. Well, actually, I think those are two different kinds of tired. Anyway, last night I just felt kind of bad, and this morning I woke up congested with a sore throat.

On top of everything, we are supposed to leave for a marriage retreat today. I'm a little depressed that I'm sick, because it seems like every single time we try to go somewhere or do something special, I'm sick. When we went to Texas in March, I was getting over mastitis. I was 8 and a half months pregnant when we celebrated our anniversary (although pregnancy is not sickness, you're definitely not yourself when you're as huge as I was). And I missed my own stinkin' baby shower because I got food poisoning.

I am going to see how I feel throughout the day, and hopefully we'll still make the drive up to New Hampshire tonight. But gosh, I wish that for once I was 100%.
