John Donne is my homeboy, and Craig's List is my friend.
I found a set of baby furniture on Craig's List that we are going to buy. It is not 100% final yet, because we still need to go look at it in person and make sure everything is as great as it looks in the pictures. But it's a high end set that was only used for 6 months (it's downright shiny!), and the people are selling at a really reasonable price. I think it'll look nice in the cowboy room, and I also think it'll work well as Baby B grows. I'm posting pictures, for those of you who would really want to see them, like Mom. :)

John Donne is My Homeboy
I just felt like posting my favorite poem today. It's John Donne's Holy Sonnet XIV.
Batter my heart, three-person'd God; for you
As yet but knock; breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town, to another due,
Labour to admit you, but O, to no end.
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy;
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.
You might have to read that a few times to really get the feel of it, but it'll be worth the time. It's my favorite poem of all time. Donne was famous for his clever (and very bawdy) carpe diem poems early in life, then some mysterious turn happened and he became a famous preacher who wrote amazing spiritual poems, and many of his sermons survive. ("No man is an island" comes from one of his sermons, for example.)
This sonnet is particularly steeped in Scripture, too. Don't miss the parallel to Paul's "What I want to do I do not do" in lines 7-8 (Romans 7), etc.
Oh, and one of my favorite things is the "o'erthrow me" in line 3. I just never see it coming, and it strikes me every time. I think it surprises me because it follows this crescendo of self-achievements ("that I may rise, and stand"), and then he just pulls the rug out and says that, no, this is not about what I can do in my own power. The best thing I can do for myself is to overthrow myself. It's so true, isn't it? One of the hardest things we can do is to overthrow ourselves--our will, our pride. Yet I need God to come in and make it happen, to "batter my heart" and "break that knot again," because I cannot "o'erthrow me" myself.
If I ever do a Ph.D., I think I will do it on Donne. :)

Random Things
1. I am balancing a water bottle on my belly at the moment. It didn't even occur to me that that is where I had put it until just a minute ago.
2. It is really hot right now. It's 94 with a heat index of 104. (And no central air!) I have been out in the heat doing a little shopping at a major shopping center--you know, the kind with all the big chains like Super Target, Babies R Us, Michael's, Old Navy, etc. These shopping centers are few and far between in Boston, but extremely prevalent in Houston. So that, coupled with the heat and humidity, has made me homesick. :) Plus, I think I am going to treat myself and drive out to Chili's and get some southwest eggrolls. Mmm.

Crazy Boston Weather
So the past three days have been borderline chilly in Boston. Yes, I did say "chilly." We have gotten a random cold snap that has made our mornings in the high 50's and low 60's, and the highs have only gotten up to around 70. In August.
You Texans may emit a moan of jealousy at this point.
But this is a little weird. Last night, I saw a girl wearing a scarf--a scarf! Did I mention that it is August?
However, tomorrow it is supposed to be 90 and humid again. We are headed back to the realm of normal, although I cannot say I prefer humid 90-degree days to crisp, 70-degree days. I mean, it has almost felt like fall, my favorite season. But there is definitely something oddly unseasonable and out of place when the temp is nowhere near where it ought to be (hmm, which I guess is kind of like Christmas in Houston when it's 80 degrees out).

Overkill?
Okay, I know probably no one is interested in this but me, but I am going to post the ultrasound pictures again. Why? Well, mainly because I think he is so cute! I mean, check out that profile! When I really looked closely at the pictures, I said to Nathan, "Is it weird that I think our ultrasound pictures are cute?" Because, come on, admit it, ultrasound pictures are not exactly known for being cute. In fact, I nearly always have had to have people identify body parts for me. But not this time!

Baby Benesh's Name
So Katie suggested I give you guys the opportunity to suggest names for Baby B. That is fine with me, especially since we have not settled on anything. Actually, stating it like that makes it sound like we are close to picking a name--we are not. So suggest away! Sounds like fun!
In fact, Nathan has been all into name-picking lately. He suggested we get a baby name book, and that we make a list of the top 10 first names and the top 10 middle names. I was like, "What? Who are you, and what have you done with my laid back, anti-list husband?"
You see, regardless of the fact that Nathan is the Harvard student, I am the nerd in the family. I am the spreadsheet person, the budget person, the person who plans our errands on the weekends, the one who insists we do things sooner rather than later, etc. So it's really pretty funny that he wants to approach choosing the name in such an orderly way.
Anyway, here are some guidelines:

The Monk Tour
Well, so I had originally written this super long post here about Liz and her Monk Tour. Then, I decided it'd be much easier to just start a new blog to post the emails she sends out. Here it is: monktour.blogspot.com. I'll type up a little explanation about what this is, and I hope you go check it out regularly!!
For those of you who are blog regulars, you are a little familiar with my friend, Liz, and her Monk Tour. The whole story, in a nutshell, is this: I led a freshman girls' Bible study while at Baylor, and Liz was one of the girls in the study. She and I became good friends, and we have kept up for the past 8 years or so, since we first met. Liz is a wonderful, godly person, and I can say without hesitation that she, more than anyone else I know, walks by faith.
A few years ago, she went to Myanmar (Burma) to live for about 7 or 8 months as a missionary. (I was just remembering this morning that we actually sent a wedding invitation to Thailand for her! So I guess this was in 2003.) God worked in amazing ways, and she unexpectedly befriended a group of Buddhist monks. It is extremely unusual that monks, highly regarded in their culture, would befriend a westerner and a woman. But they wanted English lessons. So Liz took the opportunity to teach them Bible verses and songs like Amazing Grace--all this in a country where it is very dangerous to do so. In fact, we always had to write emails in code, using words like "I talked to father" instead of "I prayed" or "father said" instead of "I read in the Bible."
The monks are extremely curious, philosophical, and interested in learning. In fact, after Liz left, many of them spread out all over Asia to attend different seminaries to further their education. However, most of them kept in touch with Liz via email, and she was able to continue conversations with them about Jesus. They're also extremely fun-loving and funny, and they all genuinely love Liz as a friend. I think they all laugh a lot together.
One or two monks have actually become Christians, which is a huge deal not only spiritually but also culturally and personally. They have to leave their honored post as a monk (a socially higher rank, I believe), they are alienated from their families, and so on. It is a very big decision for them to decide to follow Christ. I remember that one of them accepted Christ shortly before or after Liz left Burma, and he was very afraid to go home and tell his family, although he knew he needed to tell them what he now knew about Jesus. I am not sure what happened to him. Another former monk, Ravi, who is now living in the States, became a Christian, as well. The rest of them still live in Asia.
A couple of summers ago, Liz did a law internship in India, so on the way, she stopped in Sri Lanka to visit some of the monks. I believe she also saw some of them in India.Which brings us to this summer. She organized what she is calling her "Monk Tour," where she planned a trip to go see all of her monks, spread out across southern Asia. She opened up the trip to anyone who wanted to go with her, since so many of us have been keeping up with these men through her for the past 4 years or so. One friend, Christy, decided to go.
Liz sends out the most wonderful email updates. Every time I read them, I think of how much you guys would enjoy them, too, and how much you'd love to pray for them. But I've been reluctant to post them because they are quite long, and the whole blog would just turn into a Monk Tour blog. So what I've decided to do today is start a new blog just for updates about this trip.

How Many Grandmother Names Can You Think Of?
**UPDATE: Mom said her fellow teachers think "Bling" fits her. (If that doesn't tell you something about her personality, . . . ) So add that to the list.**
How many grandmother names can you think of? Because my mom's got you beat.
She is trying to think of what she wants to be called, and throughout the whole process, she has come up with about 40 names, some of which are major hum-dingers. About 3 times a week I get a phone call or an email with a new name suggestion. Here are a few (and no, I am not making these up):

- Be part of Baker 2030 (Baker College at Rice Univ.--the Baker Common Room is where Nathan and I met!)

Why Pregnancy Rocks
Superficial Reasons Why Pregnancy Rocks:
1. Someone always gives me their seat on the bus.
2. My nails are longer and stronger than they have been in my whole life. (I've always had flimsy nails that crack easily, so they've never grown very long.)
3. I get to decorate a new room.
4. My growing belly makes my butt look small.
5. I can eat an extra cookie and no one cares.
Does anyone have anything to add?

Places to Eat
Since I bought a dress for my baby showers in Houston, I have Houston on the brain. Mostly the food. (Does that really surprise you?) We are going to be there in a month, and I am already planning like every meal. I've decided I should write down all the places I need to go (did I really just type "need"?), and what better place than the blog?
So for those of you who don't live in Houston, now you will know where to eat when you visit. And for those of you who do live there, here's a list of places you should go, if you haven't been before.
- Taste of Texas steakhouse
- Los Cucos Mexican Restaurant, or Papasitos
- Hungry's Mediterranean Bistro, in Rice Village
- Cafe Lily (Lebanese food--I've never had any stuffed grape leaves that compare with theirs)
and in Waco:
- Uncle Dan's BBQ (my favorite BBQ place in all of Texas--you can order lean brisket, which means they cut off all the annoying fatty bits)
I am sure this list will grow longer over the next few weeks, as I think of more favorite haunts.

These are a Few of My Favorite Things
1. Elastic waistbands. Seriously, I don't know if I can go back to regular pants after pregnancy. These elastic waistbands are so dang comfortable.
2. Baby Style. This is a baby/maternity store I discovered yesterday, and I found some of the most stylish stuff there. It makes me feel like a normal person again! No frumpy maternity clothes to be seen! Cute, flattering fabrics everywhere! They are normally pretty pricey, but they were having a huge summer clearance, so I got some stuff for like 70% off.
3. Steak Fries. This is my pregnancy food of choice. At first, it was because salty, starchy stuff eased my morning sickness. But steak fries still make me oh so happy. I lerve them.

Nathan saw a guy wearing the funniest t-shirt in Harvard Square the other day. It was pink, and he said it had the PETA font on it. (I have no idea what that looks like, but apparently it's swirly.) So he expected it to have a PETA message on it. Instead, it said:

Nursery Ideas
So I've decided what I want as a theme for the baby's room--cowboys if it's a boy, and an English garden if it's a girl. Yay! Now we just have to find out what the sex is. That kid better cooperate when we have our ultrasound in two weeks. I REALLY want to know.
I really like the cowboy idea. I think it will be a total novelty up here in Boston, and the truth is you just can't take the Texas out of us. And, to my delight, we found the absolute cutest cowboy outfit at Babies R Us when we went there this weekend, complete with hat and boots! In fact, I've been seeing kind of a lot of cowboy baby items lately. This makes me happy.
Of course, I really like the English garden idea, too. I think it'd be really sweet and pretty. I've asked my mom to paint the baby's room. She has been taking art lessons, and she likes to draw, so she's going to do a mural having to do with either theme. Yay!
But the hitch that's been thrown into my theme ideas is bedding. I just could not find bedding that I liked at either place I'd register (Target & Babies R Us). This weekend, I had resigned myself to the fact that I might just have to get solid colors that match the mural and let the wall be the main source of art/decor in the room. But then I followed a link from Amanda Jones' blog and found THE bedding sets! This is it, folks! Normally, this is not something I'd write a blog post about, but I just cannot get over how much I love both of these sets. The downside is they're ridiculously expensive. But we'll see . . . they may just be too cute to pass up.

Why My Husband Rocks
1. He fixed the bathroom sink. This is really cool to me, because he CAN be handy but usually doesn't go to the trouble. I think handy guys are awesome, probably because my dad is a handy guy and he fixes EVERYTHING. So I really like that Nathan took the initiative and fixed the hot water faucet. Even our landlady was impressed. :)
2. He makes retarded puns. This is not news to anyone who has known him for a long time. He likes to make plays on words. Whenever I do it, I call it a Nathan pun. For example, I offered a houseguest two pieces of fruit, and they turned both down. I said, "Well, that was a fruitless effort. . . . Wow, that was a total Nathan pun." Sometimes Nathan's puns are funny, and sometimes they are retarded. But they're always fun. Fun puns! Ha! (That is an example of a bad one.)
3. He is excited about having a baby. And he will be an excellent dad. Kids love him. I think it's because he understands how to play. I think a lot of adults have forgotten how to play. Not Nathan.

P.S. More stuff that he made me take off because he is humble (#4) and it made him embarrassed. I am slipping it back in now, when I hope he won't notice....
5. He is super good looking. I hope our kids look like him.
6. He is very sweet, but he can also be firm when it's important.
7. He is super smart. He doesn't always think that's the case, but he is.
