Noah's New Stats

Noah had his four-month appointment this week. The pediatrician said he is lookin' good. Here are his new stats:

length: 26.5"
weight: 15 lbs., 3 oz.

That puts him in the 58th percentile for weight (down from about 75), and he is still up in the 94th percentile for length. He's a tall kiddo.

We went to a new doctor, and when the receptionist told him he was a baldy, he just smiled at her. It was all over from there. He had everyone charmed. :)

My First Mother's Day

I want to wish a very Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there! I feel I have a very generous spirit today and am hoping everyone has enjoyed much happiness and joy this eleventh of May. What a neat thing it is to be a mom.

This morning, Nathan got up before me (a very rare thing), and it wasn't long before I heard him banging around in the kitchen. Would you believe the guy made me breakfast? He even took Noah in there to "help" him out, which really means that he took him in there to entertain him so I could sleep longer. Now, it is a big deal for my husband to cook. He always claims he can cook, but I don't have much faith in the claim since I have rarely, if ever, seen it. (Of course, according to him, his claim is only good when it comes to camp food. That's what you get when you marry an Eagle Scout, I guess. Do you think they'll ever have a merit badge for gourmet cooking?) He made me some really yummy chocolate chip-banana pancakes. That is good stuff, my friend, and much better than camp food. It is an accomplishment that I will not let him forget, especially the next time I am in the mood for pancakes.... He also got me a really sweet card, along with some footed dessert dishes that I have been wanting for a long time. Yay!

It is nice to be a mom and be honored on Mother's Day. I didn't know it would mean so much to me, but I guess I didn't know how great it is to be a mom before, either.

So what did we do for the rest of the day? Pretty much nothing but lie on the couch and watch the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice. What a good day, right? We didn't go to church and kept it a quiet day because I have been sick. I still have not gotten over my cold, and yesterday we were out for a good bit of the day, which resulted in my losing my voice almost completely. It's so weird--it doesn't hurt, and my cough is much better, but I have no voice. Little Noah had a good day, too, and was fun to be around. And I got a really funny card from Nathan's parents and a sweet voicemail from my mom.

And a very Happy Mother's Day to Mom and Mama B., too! Y'all are very special to us.

Four Months Old!

Noah is doing some fun new things, the best of which is laughing! We heard his first laugh last night, and I caught the third and fourth little giggles in a video:

What else is new? Well, he is getting much more coordinated with his hands, so he is able to grab his toys with more consistency--and get them to his mouth. In fact, check out this picture. There's no better way to fall asleep than in the middle of playing with your toys!

The other funny thing that he has started doing is trying to sit up. Well, it's more that he just is tired of wherever he is and wants to either sit up or forward. Anyway, he pushes his elbows back in order to push his torso forward. It's really pretty smart of him to have figured this out, except that he only succeeds in getting his head and shoulders forward. Is this a normal developmental thing? Because I haven't read anything about it.

He's getting more and more active, too. Sometimes I think he'd be a lot happier if he could just sit up and crawl, because he gets bored sitting in one place for a while. He's keeping me busy!

All Things New

Lauren is changing a few things. It is time for some refurbishment, some newness, some refreshment. It is spring, after all. And I am ready to start looking better, because I am afraid I'm falling into that dreaded mommy mode--half the time, my hair is a mess, I'm dressed in running pants and a t-shirt, and I just don't look that cute. Granted, my Me Time is at a premium, but if I were more disciplined with my time, I bet I could fit some more things in during my day (like if I quit wasting so much time on the computer...). I told Nathan I am going to make an effort not to adopt the frazzled mommy look, and here I am doing it like three days a week. So it's time to make some changes.

  1. I need a haircut like nobody's business. It is nearly as long as it was when I had long hair, and I actually want it above my shoulders. Somehow it never looks good. So I am going to make an appointment soon.
  2. I am going to have my brows waxed. Oh, I cannot wait. The girl who does them always does a PERFECT job. Because there is nothing I dread more than than having a bad brow wax. Amen? I mean, you definitely do not want some weird shape or for them to take too much off. But when it's done right, I just feel so polished and pretty.
  3. I went to my first Weight Watchers meeting today. I have pretty much hit a wall with my weight loss (or, really, that happened a month or two ago), and I still have 20-25 lbs. to lose. Yes, that much. Sigh. I know if I don't attack this and just get rid of it, I will be fighting this weight for years. So I am going to be proactive and get it off now.
  4. I am going to start running--I think. I'm a little anxious about writing that on the blog since I haven't actually done it yet, and I don't want to announce something that doesn't end up happening, but I also want to put it out there so I hold myself accountable to it. I used to really enjoy running. In college, I used to run two or three miles about three times a week, and I've never felt or looked better. So I am going to try to work up to that again. (So what if that was eight years ago? Eek!) In fact, Nathan and I have talked about signing up for a 5k run sometime this summer or fall so we're motivated to get in shape for it (although I should say "I" instead of "we" because Nathan has never been so out of shape that he couldn't go out and run 3 miles at a moment's notice).
Wish me luck!

Free Netflix

Anybody want a month of free Netflix movies?

Nathan and I have a Netflix membership, and we love it. We never have to go to the video store--we just go online, move what we want to see to the top of our queue, and within a day or two, they're here. You can keep the DVD for as long as you like, too, because there are no late fees, and the shipping is free. Plus, everything is nearly always available, even new releases. And compared to paying $5 per rental at Blockbuster (plus the gas to get there, plus the occasional late fee), we pay less than $15 per month with Netflix and watch a movie or two a week. I also really like that I can go online and create a queue of things I know I already want to see.

Anybody want to check it out? I just got some coupons for one free month in the mail that I can give away to friends and family, so I will be giving them to the first four people who leave a comment.

Our Weekend

Although I was not feeling my best on Friday, we did drive up to New Hampshire to enjoy our church's couples retreat, and we were glad we did. I definitely was not at my best the whole weekend, but it was still fun, and we got to meet some new couples and develop new relationships.

I left Boston with a cold and arrived in New Hampshire with allergies. Now, I do not usually suffer from allergies, so this is a little weird. But once we got there, I was dealing with the runny nose, uncontrollable sneezing, crazy itching eye, itchy throat, etc. Once I got some Benadryl in me, I felt much better. But for the better half of the retreat, our small group suffered through my sneezing and watery eye, which made it look like I was touched by and crying at everyone's stories, which was kind of funny.

This was also the first time that we handed Noah off to any kind of babysitter, save my mom and grandma, who probably only babysat him a total of five hours over two different days. Nathan and I were really kind of anxious-sad to pass him off to anyone, but we knew that it had to be done at some point. Well, the little guy did not do so well. I think it was a combination of a couple of factors: 1.) the room where he was supposed to nap had lots of little toddlers, so it was not all that quiet, and 2.) he had never spent that much time away from me. The one day he did not do well, he had been in the care of the babysitters all morning, was with us at lunch but got passed around the table a lot (so he wasn't really WITH us), and then went back to the babysitters for a couple of hours before he let them have it. They had to call us out of our small group, and when I got there, the poor kid was inconsolable. I think we may have to do this in smaller increments--a couple hours here, a couple hours there. Any tips?

All in all, we had a very nice weekend, and it was good to get away and to meet some really nice new people!

Ugh

I am sick. I hate being sick. I am a sick weenie.

Noah got a cough earlier this week, and he was a weenie, too. Poor kid was super fussy for a couple of afternoons. But Mommy is even more of a weenie, because I am not experiencing my very first cold ever, which I would imagine is quite an unpleasant experience.

Anyway, apparently I caught whatever Noah caught, except I have it worse. Noah had a yucky cough on Tuesday, it was better on Wednesday, and it was pretty much gone on Thursday. I got his cough, but it didn't seem bad at all, and I wasn't worried about it. However, I knew something was up when I was just exhausted yesterday. I hadn't been that bone tired since I was pregnant, people, not even when Noah was eating every two hours. Well, actually, I think those are two different kinds of tired. Anyway, last night I just felt kind of bad, and this morning I woke up congested with a sore throat.

On top of everything, we are supposed to leave for a marriage retreat today. I'm a little depressed that I'm sick, because it seems like every single time we try to go somewhere or do something special, I'm sick. When we went to Texas in March, I was getting over mastitis. I was 8 and a half months pregnant when we celebrated our anniversary (although pregnancy is not sickness, you're definitely not yourself when you're as huge as I was). And I missed my own stinkin' baby shower because I got food poisoning.

I am going to see how I feel throughout the day, and hopefully we'll still make the drive up to New Hampshire tonight. But gosh, I wish that for once I was 100%.
